The 1889 Institute currently seeks an attorney to fill the full-time position of Legal Fellow. (The holder of this position may also carry the title of Scholar in Residence in the Oklahoma State University Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise.)

Legal Fellow Responsibilities:

  • Writing, which could include amicus briefs, comments on agency rulemaking, policy papers, law review articles, and reports on the state of the law in Oklahoma.
  • Interacting with media, lawmakers, and advocacy groups to inform them of Institute research.
  • Possible teaching at Oklahoma State University and potential for law review collaborations with the university’s business law faculty.
  • Litigation is NOT among Legal Fellow responsibilities.


Topics Potentially Addressed:

  • Legal issues specific to topics that the Institute might address.
  • Occupational licensing, corporate welfare/cronyism, land use, and/or business regulation, which are especially ripe subjects for law review articles and legal policy papers.
  • The Oklahoma constitution.


Legal Fellow Qualifications:

  • Attorney comfortable working with both legal nuts and bolts and big picture policy issues
  • Ability to work at high professional level without supervision
  • High level of experience writing on state policy, preferably in some of the subject areas above
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Comfort working with and around others
  • Experience dealing with law maker and agency officials is a plus


Compensation:
In addition to salary commensurate with experience, a health insurance plan is provided.
